Nuke Copy Node Equivalent in DaVinci Fusion

Updated: 7 days ago

If you're familiar with Nuke, you’ve likely used the Copy node to replace and combine channels in your compositing workflow. But did you know that DaVinci Fusion offers a similar capability? In my latest tutorial, I demonstrate how to replicate Nuke's Copy node functionality using Fusion’s Channel Boolean node and how to save it as a custom Macro for even faster workflows.

What is the Copy Node?

In Nuke, the Copy node is a powerful tool used to replace or copy specific channels (like alpha, RGB, or others) from one stream to another. It’s a staple for compositors, providing a straightforward way to manage and manipulate channels efficiently.

While Fusion doesn’t have a dedicated Copy node, its Channel Boolean node can perform the same tasks with precision. By understanding how to set up this node, you can streamline your projects and achieve the same results as in Nuke.

What You’ll Learn in This Tutorial

  1. Setting Up the Channel Boolean Node:

    • How to configure the Channel Boolean node to replicate the Copy node’s functionality.

    • Replacing and merging RGB and alpha channels seamlessly.

  2. Creating a Custom Macro:

    • Step-by-step instructions to save your setup as a Macro for future projects.

    • Tips on organizing and naming your Macro for quick access.

  3. Optimizing Your Workflow:

    • How this approach can save time and keep your node graph tidy.

    • Best practices for using the Macro in various scenarios.

Why Use This Node?

In my own workflows, I often use Nuke’s Copy node to copy alpha channels, but for more advanced channel manipulations, the Channel Boolean node in Fusion shines. This tutorial focuses on how to quickly achieve similar results, making Fusion an even more versatile tool for your compositing needs.

By creating a Macro, you’ll not only speed up your work but also ensure consistency across your projects. It’s a small adjustment that can make a big difference in your productivity.
